Debian User Forums • View topic. Ask THEM why your card is not properly supported (my GT5. You don't understand.. I have tried about 5 different versions from Debian repository until I gave up the "right way". I'm not very knowledgeable with GCC, but so far I could understand, something in the code compiled with a different (apparently newer) compiler or pre- processor, or I don't know what, messed something up. So the module compiled with different versions of headers would cause major failure at boot time. I didn't investigate the issue in depth - I neither have the time nor motivation to do that.
I simply report that when using the download from NVidia it worked, when using the version in Debian repository - it didn't even after couple of tries. I don't know of any statistics, perhaps my case is more or less unique, yet, from the looks of it (and the number of google hits on the particular problem) it seems that it is rather a commonplace. Perhaps, instead of replying to my remarks, which you may not agree with, but it bothers me very little, you could've shown some understanding of OP's problem and explained him or her in simple language what is causing the problem and what "easy steps" on top of five easy steps which took 3 screenfuls of 1. It would be also helpful if you could, instead of saying "it will be easy", actually explain what N easy steps will be necessary each time the OP makes any update related to X. I never wrote a driver in my life, but I had to reverse engineer other projects (nothing illegal, just the lost source code), and I can understand fairly well the problems the developers of Nouveau version might be facing. It would be amplified by inability to test against real world hardware and so on. That is not their fault and I didn't intend to put it that way.

However, it is more important to look at the situation realistically, then to pretend that things work the way you like. These drivers are mostly bad / hazardous if used with high- end video cards. In the sense that they will likely cause you a lot of problems. I also specifically mentioned the model of the card I am using - it is not the latest and greatest, as you put that. Even at the time it was new (about 2- 3 years ago) it was a good mid- ware, the "greatest" would begin at GTX 4.
Now, back to the problem OP has - it is most likely caused by that when he or she installed the system header files, they were out of sync with the versions required to build the drivers for the video card that OP has. Now, not everyone is an expert with GCC and particularly not an expert at the problems of the kind mentioned above. I am not, and from little experience that I have in this particular field, I would advise someone who doesn't even know what is the problem they encountered to stay away from it and not to try to fix it themselves, as they very likely to screw something else up. This makes sense to me as being an experience earned in practice.
However, if you feel knowledgeable enough to explain and guide the OP through the compilation and the setup process. Of course, please do! Please keep in mind, however, that there is about a 5. VERSION}- source will not work with the card they are intended for, and you need to experiment with different version of drivers to find the one that will probably work. The driver version weren't tested neither by the manufacturer nor by the packager with the actual hardware and the system that you have to work on.
More than that - after you actually find the version that works, most of all you want to prevent the updates to these drivers, and in no event you don't want the system to update them with something like apt- get upgrade - this, if you install through DKMS will most likely cause you immense amount of problems in the end. Again, I am saying this from experience with the actual system and hardware.
Code: Select all- -no- cc- version- check. This is a timer bomb. Never, never- ever- ever do that! Not to mention, never advise this to anyone else. This may be good if you want a quick check of whether the code will at all compile and you need to get through "annoying warnings". But you should not use this this option for compiling the program that needs to be any what reliable! In case you didn't know, there is a good article on UB: http: //blog.
This is what I believe has happened in my case. The "wrapper" or w/e that module is, which was compiled in my case yielded different output from the one the programmer expected. This is what I refer to as "untested". But if you use that switch, you are basically playing "Russian roulette".
Probably, you were just lucky so far.
